Does your air conditioner have trouble keeping up with the heat on a hot Oklahoma Summer day? Do you have the feeling it could be performing better? Sometimes diagnosing your air conditioning problems can be challenging unless the system has quit altogether. Delaying service may further damage your system, almost certainly leading to an AC repair emergency down the line.
Symptoms of a Failing Air Conditioner
Has your air conditioner started making an unusual noise? Do your indoor temperatures vary greatly from room to room? Does your AC unit seem to run for long intervals, and still not get your house as cool as you'd like it? Sometimes the solution is adding a little refrigerant, but sometimes the issues are more comprehensive.
AC Repair vs. Replacement
A good rule-of-thumb for knowing when to choose repair over replacement is the $5000 Rule: multiply the repair costs by the age of the unit, and if the total is over $5000, then it’s time to replace. For instance, if your repair costs would be $450 and the unit is 12 years old, $450 x 12 = $5400, so a replacement would be recommended. Conversely, the same $450 repair on an 8-year-old unit would be $3600, so a repair would be the way to go.
The age of your air conditioning system is really the deciding factor. If your system is more than 10 years old, Energy Star recommends upgrading to an energy-efficient unit, and most technicians will recommend an HVAC replacement if the units are more than 15 years old.
