In Oklahoma, our winters can get just as cold as the summers get hot. We rely on our heating systems to keep us comfortable all season long.
Symptoms of a Failing Heating System
Has your furnace started making an unusual noise? Do your indoor temperatures vary greatly from room to room? Maybe your pilot light keeps going out, there are strange odors coming from your vents, or your heating unit seems to run for long intervals and still doesn't get your house as warm as you'd like it.
Furnace Repair vs. Replacement
A good rule-of-thumb for knowing when to choose repair over replacement is the $5000 Rule: multiply the repair costs by the age of the unit, and if the total is over $5000, then it’s time to replace. For instance, if your repair costs would be $450 and the unit is 12 years old, $450 x 12 = $5400, so a replacement would be recommended. Conversely, the same $450 repair on an 8-year-old unit would be $3600, so a repair would be the way to go.
The age of your furnace is really the deciding factor. If your system is more than 10 years old, Energy Star recommends upgrading to an energy-efficient unit, and most technicians will recommend an HVAC replacement if the units are more than 15 years old.
